Clinical experience with cefuzonam sodium in the acute empyema

Abstract
In the acute empyema, the use of approprite abtibiotics after the drainage of the empyema content by closed thoracotomy is very important. Cefuzonam sodium(Cefnam¢ç) is recently developed semisynthetic cephalosporins that has a broad spectrum of bactericidal & bacteriostatic effects, especially against l-lactamase producing bacteria.
Among 30 patients of the acute empyema, the number of negative conversion of the bacteria within 14 days in the einpyema contents was 25 patients.
Total clinical efficiency was 83.3%, and adverse effects were noted in 3 patients, with nausea & vomiting, which was controlled without treatment.
